Test of English as a Foreign Language
Test of English as a Foreign Language (iBT = Internet Based Test)
The test consists of four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. All sections are taken on the same day, and the test is approximately four hours long.
- Instructions for answering the questions are provided in each section. No computer tutorials.
• TOEFL iBT is not computer-friendly. Each candidate receives the same set of
questions. Candidates can take notes during the test. At the end of the exam, all
notes will be collected and destroyed at the exam center.
• In the Speaking section, candidates speak into a microphone and their responses
are digitally recorded and sent to the ETS Online Assessment Network.
• The writing section requires the candidate to enter an answer, which is submitted to
her ETS online scoring network.
• Human evaluators trained and certified by ETS evaluate verbal and written
responses. The table below shows the scope and timing of the questions in each
section. The time limit for each section depends on the number of questions.
