Pearson Test of English

An exam overview:

An internationally recognized computer-based English language test is called the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic). It gives a measurement of a test taker’s language proficiency to support educational institutions, as well as professional and governmental organizations that set academic English language proficiency standards for admission to Australian and New Zealand universities.

In a test of independent or integrated skills, the communicative abilities measured are listening, reading, speaking, and writing.

The performance on each exam item contributes to the final score. There are 20 different item categories and between 70 and 91 items for each test taker to complete. The grade assigned to each item goes towards the final grade. There are 10 to 90 possible points.

The enabling competencies assessed include Grammar, oral fluency, pronunciation, spelling, vocabulary, and written discourse.

Scoring guide:

Machine scoring is used for all PTE Academic items. Scores for some item categories are determined only by correctness, whereas those for others are determined by correctness, formal aspects, and response quality.

Automated scoring methods produce the results for item kinds that evaluate speech and writing abilities. Scores might be either correct or wrong. No negative marking is awarded.
